Centre for Environmental Economics & Policy

Bringing together evidence-based research, partnerships, and policy advice to shape resilient and sustainable futures

About the Centre

Environmental decisions are complex. They require choices to be made about how we value and manage scarce environmental resources in the face of uncertainty, competing priorities and long-term consequences. Our Centre specialises in applying tools from economics and other social science disciplines to understand these complexities and identify solutions that maximise environmental, social, and economic outcomes.

Our interdisciplinary research integrates knowledge from ecology, engineering and other scientific disciplines to generate robust evidence for improved planning, policy and investment decisions.  From valuing environmental assets and ecosystem services, to evaluating interventions and developing decision-support frameworks, we provide rigorous research and insights that help decision-makers translate complex environmental challenges into clear, defensible and actionable outcomes.

  • We engage with government, industry and NGOs on environmental, social and economic policy issues to address knowledge gaps and training needs.

  • We provide practical policy advice, capacity building activities and research services to government and industry as well as participate in external management committees, panel discussions and other policy processes.

  • We collaborate with researchers from around the world on nationally and internationally funded research programs and contribute to scientific knowledge in environmental economics through publications and conference presentations.

Training

  • We teach undergraduate and Masters courses at UWA in environmental economics and resource management.

  • We supervise postgraduate research students on topics related to environmental economics.  Our PhD students are actively involved in centre activities including building networks, attending conferences and participating in activities and events.
